In der ersten Ausstellung der Reihe „Let’s talk about the art world“ stehen Künstler:innen im Fokus, die in ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit zur Reflexion über das Kunstsystem einladen. Hinter den Facetten der Kunstwelt wirkt ein komplexes System: der Kunstmarkt. Die Arbeiten kreisen um Fragen wie: Wer entscheidet, was Kunst ist? Wer bestimmt, wer Künstler:in ist, und welche Rolle nehmen die verschiedenen Akteur:innen der Kunstwelt in diesem komplexen Gefüge ein? In Anlehnung an Sieben Tage in der Kunstwelt von Sarah Thornton nähert sich die Ausstellung im Q18 dem Feld Kunst als sozialem Raum. Sie widmet sich dem vielschichtigen Zusammenspiel der Kunstwelt und dessen kritischer Reflexion: Künstler:innen, Sammler:innen, Galerist:innen, Kritiker:innen, Institutionen, Preise und das Publikum selbst agieren gemeinsam in einem System, das Kunst nicht nur hervorbringt, sondern auch sichtbar macht, bewertet und verkauft. Um diese Zusammenhänge greifbar zu machen, werden die ausgestellten Arbeiten Filmausschnitten aus The Great Contemporary Art Bubble von Ben Lewisgegen übergestellt, der die ökonomischen Dynamiken des Kunstbetriebs beleuchtet und so in Dialog mit den künstlerischen Positionen tritt; gemeinsam entsteht ein vielschichtiges Bild der Mechanismen des Gesamtsystems.

The first exhibition in the series „Let’s talk about the art world“ focuses on artists whose practices invite reflection on the structures of the art world itself. Behind the many facets of the contemporary art scene lies a complex system: the art market. The exhibited works revolve around questions such as: Who decides what counts as art? Who determines who is recognized as an artist? And what roles do the various actors within the art world occupy in this intricate network?

Inspired by Sarah Thornton’s Seven Days in the Art World, the exhibition at Q18 approaches the field of art as a social space. It examines the multifaceted interplay of the art world and offers a critical reflection on its mechanisms. Artists, collectors, gallerists, critics, institutions, awards, and audiences all participate in a system that not only produces art but also determines its visibility, value, and marketability.

To make these interrelationships tangible, the exhibited artworks are juxtaposed with excerpts from Ben Lewis’s documentary The Great Contemporary Art Bubble, which examines the economic dynamics of the contemporary art market. In dialogue with the artistic positions, the film contributes to a multilayered understanding of the mechanisms that shape the art world as a whole.
